All of our Domestic Ovens are sold as an easy self-install kit, keeping the price as low as possible for this high quality product. 

We do have a couple of options on housings where we can do the install for you. All we need is a good level hard standing area and normally it would take just one day to complete the installation.

An oven installed by us in a day.

The very first step is deciding what you want the final finished oven to look like and where you want it to go.

This will determine what needs to be done to install it correctly.

Many of our customers merely install the oven on a simple base made of bricks with a flagstone top which the oven sits directly on top of. They then use the oven as it is - for cooking a whole load of dishes with the fire ticking over all the time to maintain the temperature that they require. Once the fire goes out, the oven cools in about 2 -3 hours, there is still plenty of time to cook a joint a batch of bread or a great crumble.

Other customers want the whole thing built into an elaborate housing insulated to give maximum amount of cool down time.

Deciding early what you want your oven to look like when its finished is the key and if you can't make up your mind then just use the oven as it is on one of our quick assemble stands and decide later.

The Dome and Floor of the oven (the parts that we sell) are but the first step in a chain of events that will need to happen in this decision process. While every single customer has a completely different idea of what an oven should look like when its finished, the important thing to remember is that every single wood burning oven has a dome built into it.

We have been hand making these out of the highest grade of refractory (very high heat industrial fire cement) that we can find . Our Oven Domes and Oven Floors have been designed to have the correct size opening for the flue diameter and the correct amount of height to the dome to ensure that the oven is able to maintain a reliably constant temperature with a minimum fire size.

Deciding on what you want the oven to look like when finished will also have a huge bearing on the final cost of the investment. For instance if you want the final oven to have an insulated brick-effect dome shape,  this will cost a lot more and is so much more challenging than if you want to finish the oven in an insulated box housing with a pent or pitched roof. The performance of the oven in both instances will be exactly the same but the cost vastly different.

During my 11 years of designing and building wood fired ovens, I have had an uncountable number of calls from people asking for advise on their home builds.

Most of these have been people who had already finished building ovens from the design of Pompey/Brick Ovens or chearper brick alternatives which they have either found or bought on the internet.

I have also had numerous calls from people wanting to save even more money by building a cob oven.

Whilst both cob ovens, pompey ovens and brick ovens all have their place in the scheme of wood fired ovens, I feel compelled to advise you that an english garden is not the right place - for the following reasons.....

The average garden oven will be used up to 30 time a year and mostly you will walk outside on a sunny day or afternoon and say "great weather lets cook outside ". You want your oven to come up to temperature really fast using a minimal amount of wood and you want to know that you have enough residual heat to cook all of those fantastic mediterranean dishes.

Our ovens are handmade from 2" (50mm) of the highest grade of fire cement all with multiple layers of reinforcing to ensure that they give you years and years of problem free performance.

At 2"  (50mm) thick the oven heats up in just 40 minutes! In fact, with well dried wood, it is possible to get one of our ovens up to 600 degrees C in just 20 minutes! (it takes just 20 minutes more to get enough energy into the thermal mass of our ovens to give you all the heat that you need for doing most kinds of cooking).

Due to the fact that our ovens are made from furnace grade materials you will not get an oven collapse AND the ovens are uneffected by our wet weather.

Compare that then to the heat required by a brick built oven - more than 4 times the weight means 4 times more energy to heat up, therefore 4 times more cost. When you think that most people will be cooking some pizzas followed by a roast and then a delicious crumble to finish why do you need an oven that needs so much energy to heat up and takes a day to cool down?

One of our ovens insulated into a housing or a dome will still require the same amount of energy to heat up and yet on just 10 kg of wood will take 20 hrs to cool to 70 degrees C. All that for less than price of a very expensive imported oven.

It's pure physics!

With regard to cob ovens, I absolute love the idea of cob but and there is a big one, cob ovens need to be made right. Once you have made it it needs to be tempered and fired correctly. When that has all been done you then need to keep it dry. Even the moisture in the air in England will destroy a cob oven. Believe me the last thing you want is to invite some friends round for a day of wood fired treats to find that bits of sand and clay have dropped into the pizzas. Or that the worst thing happens and the dome collapses on the roast!!!! Most cob ovens are re-built every year in spring or summer as the wet winter weather destroys them. If you are convinced that you want to go cob then may I suggest that you think about buying one of our domes and then cob over the top of it. That way the oven will never collapse on you and you can re-cob the outside as an when you feel like it. You can take all the credit for the fancy decorative work. We don't mind !

We have had Film Companies, Set Builders and Medieval Re-enactment Groups purchase our Ovens exactly for this reason.

If you live in a clean air area then the smoke control act may very well effect you and your oven. So before you go and build an oven in your garden and spend possibly thousands of pounds on it please make sure that you are in the clear.

It has taken me more than 18 months and quite literally tens of thousands of pounds to get clarification on how the law may apply to an oven in domestic use.

The clean air act says in brief that it is an offence to emit smoke from the chimney of a building or to use an un licenced fuel in an un exempt appliance.

Early discussions with defra excluded wood burning pizza ovens in the garden as it was felt that wood burning ovens would fall under the same legislation as a bbq or a chimenea  and as a result you could only be prosecuted for creating a nusciance to your neighbours ie smoking them out.

It is quite clear that a bbq or a chimenea can not be called a building, but an oven on the other hand has a chimney and when built in could be considered a building and as a result quite clearly could fall under the clean air regulations .

Early in 2009 one of my customers built one of our ovens into a housing in his  garden, the neighbours  were an unappreciative bunch and complained to the local environmental officer who deemed the oven to be non compliant  and he was offered the choice of removing the oven with a warning or face a 1000 pound fine each time he used it.

As a result of this injustice I deemed to put all of our ovens through the smoke control testing thinking that it would cost a couple of thousand pounds and take a couple of months . I was mistaken and it seems that as the first person to put wood burning ovens through the tests defra now have to re write the rule book but after getting my local MP involved  I am happy top say that from the 6th of April 2011 the Dingley dell range of commercial and domestic ovens will be on the statute as the only uk  made wood burning ovens that have this exemption and 1 of only 3 manufacturers world wide.

Over the last year I have seen many ovens on sale claiming to have exemption under some european certification some of these companies are quite large organisations so  Please beware these ovens are not exempt and with more people wanting to have wood fired ovens in their gardens the regulations will just get enforced more and more stringently .

When you buy an oven from us you are buying more than 11 years of dedication and development our ovens are not expensive they are a high quality product that has stood the test of time in through the vagaries of our very unique English weather.

I have spoken to so many people that have tried to build their own oven from scratch and who have admitted that it cost more than one of ours and took much longer to build than they thought it would but worst of all they are illegal and they could face prosecution for using it.

At Dingley Dell you will get an oven that you can install and use the same weekend and once installed you will not be open to prosecution for using it .
